Bruxism

Bruxism is a term used to describe the involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth. The condition is characterized by horizontal movement of the lower jaw due to tense masticatory muscles. Bruxism can affect people of all ages, but it is most commonly seen in children.

Mild forms of bruxism may not require treatment. However, in some individuals, untreated teeth grinding can lead to serious issues affecting the jaw and teeth. Currently, there are various theories regarding the causes of bruxism. The main suspected factor is everyday stress. Other potential factors include genetic predisposition, harmful habits, existing conditions such as sleep apnea, diabetes, mental disorders, and more. Once bruxism is diagnosed, appropriate treatment for the patient can be determined. This may include:

а) Custom-made splints designed to protect the teeth from wear, cracks, and fractures, and to relieve tension in the masticatory muscles. Splints are mainly worn at night, but in some cases, they can also be worn during the day.

b) Psychotherapy is another commonly used method, particularly effective in cases where the condition is triggered by stress, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and other factors.

c) Lifestyle changes, such as modifying harmful habits, engaging in regular physical activity, or adjusting the diet, can also be recommended for patients with bruxism.

d) Medication therapy can also be effective for managing severe forms of the condition. In such cases, patients may be prescribed muscle relaxants, antidepressants, and other medications.

e) The application of botulinum toxin to the masticatory muscles is another widely used solution for teeth grinding, helping to relax the muscles. The procedure may need to be repeated periodically.

f) Treating underlying conditions that may cause bruxism is another approach to managing the condition.
